Richard P. Burgoon, Jr.

Education

Rick Burgoon earned his undergraduate degrees in biology, psychology and political science from the University of California, Irvine in 1984. He went on to attain his Juris Doctor from the University of New Hampshire/Franklin Pierce Law Center, and a Master in Business Administration from San Diego State University. Rick has been a member of the California State Bar Association since 1987.

Practice

Rick began his professional career practicing in the intellectual property field. He then spent 15 years as an in-house attorney with several public biopharmaceutical companies, including as General Counsel and Chief Operations Officer. Rick joined Furlan & Associates in January 2020 and now represents indigent clients in Bennington County in all facets of criminal proceedings and litigation.

Experience

Rick and his wife, Dr. Jennifer Romans Burgoon, moved to Vermont in 2019 so that Jennifer could pursue her career as a geriatric clinical psychologist. In order to meet the requirements to become licensed to practice law in Vermont, Rick spent a year as an intern at the Bennington County Public Defender’s Office, where he primarily assisted the lawyers there researching, writing and litigating motions in the Bennington Criminal court.

Personal

Prior to moving to Vermont, Rick spent three years teaching high school in the Mississippi Delta and in the People’s Republic of China. Before that, Rick spent 15-years starting and running private and public companies in the biopharmaceutical, medical device and Internet industries. Rick has three adult-children, two sons-in-law, and one granddaughter.
